Gender-based violence and harassment

Inappropriate behaviour towards a person based on their gender. It often builds on the perceived inferiority of one gender or the other.

Examples:

  • The only male in a meeting is left out of the discussion.
  • Deliberately offensive communication with a person of a non-binary gender.
  • Disparaging questions about sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Inadequate response by supervisors and/or employer to complaints of gender-based violence or harassment.
  • Failure to promote a qualified employee on the basis of gender.
  • Making jokes at the expense of a non-binary student.
