Prejudice

It can influence decision-making in the workplace. Also known as implicit bias, implicit prejudice or implicit attitude. Cognitive shortcuts of which one is unaware. Often manifest as negative attitudes towards a particular social group. They are shaped by experience and based on learned associations between certain characteristics and social categories (race, gender, etc.). Our perception and behaviour can be influenced by these implicit prejudices even if we are not aware of them.

Examples:

  • Men are better at certain jobs than women.
  • Women are better at taking care of children.
  • Women react emotionally and cannot handle high workloads in senior positions.
  • Preference of people based on their appearance.
  • Prejudice against people from different cultural backgrounds.
