Sexual harassment

A form of gender-based violence. Unwelcome sexual advances or comments, requests for sexual favours and other non-verbal, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.

Examples:

  • Explicit or implicit conditioning of the provision of aid, benefits, or services by the University in exchange for a sexual act (quid pro quo).
  • Sexual innuendo and suggestive glances.
  • Commenting on body parts.
  • Sending erotic material.
  • Asking questions about sex life.
  • Unsolicited repeated invitations to meet or offers of sex.
  • Unwanted touching.
  • Talking about sex.
  • Telling sexually oriented jokes in the role of teachers (during class, in the presence of learners, informal gatherings, etc.).
  • Telling jokes that ridicule people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Mentioning gender when not related to the topic of discussion/lecture.
  • Presentation of sexually explicit, erotic or pornographic material in the context of teaching or work tasks.
  • Making obscene noises.
  • Non-consensual sexual or intimate intercourse – rape.
